Through scientific, legal and economic research it promotes the ethical preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems and opposes to all the abuses linked to the legal and illegal exploitation and trading in live wildlife and animal body parts.
It carries ahead cruelty investigations in wildlife exploitation, illegal killing-trapping and wildlife live trade abuse.
It campaigns for the protection of the environment, in particular for the ban of single-use plastic and the reduction of intensive farming.
It creates powerful partnerships through communication, networking and the involvement of celebrities.
It promotes disaster prevention, disaster management in captive facilities and after disaster AID facilitation.
WHAT WE DID
2018
1. During the Cape Town and Western Cape drought we supported the networking between the public, the organizations, the rescue services and the institutions; through the Group “Animals on Cape Town Day Zero” we spread information and networked to help domestic, farm and wild animals and prevent distress and suffering due to the drought; we worked also to mitigate the issue of plastic and chemical pollution linked to the application of drought management procedures in a big city.
2. We campaigned to create awareness on our “Water footprint” – We promoted workshops on water-wise food and recipes using them. We published the article “The impact of the drought on Wildlife end ecosystems”
3. We participated to protests in Cape Town on the Implementation of Animal Rights and for banning cosmetic testing on animals.
4. We networked to monitor the relocation of 8 wolves abandoned in a Zoo in Central Italy.
5. We attended the Cape Leopard Foundation Workshop on non-invasive predator monitoring and, when necessary, relocation.
6. We attended the Blood Lion Workshop, with a number of organizations willing to collaborate to expose the Canned Lion Industry.
7. We exposed the invasive management of big European predators in particular wolves and bears of the Trentino Region, Italy, in collaboration with local organizations.
8. We delivered to the European Parliament a Report on the EU management of companion animals and strays, in partnership with 18 international organizations.
9.We presented to the EU Parliament a Report for the approval of less-invasive strategies in the study of wild animals, free in their environment; the report and a Petition, signed by 70.000 supporters, were forwarded by the Committee to the European Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals.
10. We participated to the South African parliamentary Colloquium on the Captive Lion Breeding Industry and presented to the Committee a Report and a Petition signed by 140.000 supporters, on the controversial killing of Skye the Lion. We also delivered the Petition against the 800 lion bone export quota for 2017 and supported the petition against the 1500 lion bone export quota for 2018, by EMS Foundation and BAT.
11. We participated in protests and marches, including Free Lolita and Stop the killing of Constantia’s Baboons.
12. We participated in plastic “Clean ups”, in particular in Cape Town, Milnerton and on the Black River, in collaboration with Sea Shepherds and Beauty Without Cruelty.
13. We collaborated with a coalition of about 30 organization in the production of documents and letters relative to the controversial Captive Lion Breeding Industry, to the South African Rhino Poaching Crisis and to the controversial management of predators in the US, in particular ref the Washington State Wolf killing by WDFW.
14. We published a Public Guideline to increase public participation and raise objections to the Draft normative ref mining in South Africa, “the Mining Charter 2018”.
15. We supported the campaign to free Mufasa the White Lion and Suraya, his lioness.
16. We supported the campaign to free Lammie The lonely Elephant from the Johannesburg zoo to a respectful sanctuary.
17. We published a Public Guideline to promote public participation and comments over the Draft Normative ref Rhino in South Africa (Deadline 20-10-18).
18. We submitted (Dec 2018) a Petition and Report to the UNEP and to CITES over the shipping of African iconic animals to countries with poor welfare regulation, in particular ASIA.
2017
1. We published a Guideline for the public, to formally object to the 800 lion skeleton export quota from SA to Asia proposed by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs. We also delivered a petition signed by 110.000 supporters, requesting to stop the export of lion body parts.
2. We Petitioned the European Parliament requesting to sanction the Italian Government for not protecting the Italian wolf with an adequate Wolf Management Plan. We delivered to the EU Parliament a petition signed by 180.000 supporters, on the same matter and requested to increase the defense of wolves and hybrids.
3. We published a Report and delivered it to the EU – IUCN – ONU – over the current global war on wolves
4. We participated to several protests in Cape Town for the Ban of Animal in Circuses
5. We created the Networking Group “Save Our Wolves International” with the aim to increase the defense of the Norwegian, the Swedish and the French wolf.
6. We actively networked for the rescuing of 5 lions escaped from the Kruger in May.
7. We actively networked and collected items for the Aid of Knysna’s animal survivors after the fire.
8. We campaigned for the Protection of Amarena, the Italian Bear and for the ban of invasive strategies used in Italy by Forest Authorities to manage wildlife /human conflict, in particular for their aggressive and hurtful methods to discourage Bears’ natural behavior (eating fruit) near villages inside National Parks. Our Petition was discussed by the Italian Parliament.
9. We campaigned and exposed an Italian region’s President, Ugo Rossi, for his controversial decision of ordering the Trentino’s Forest Officials to track and kill a collared, beloved, nursing mother bear of two cubs, KJ2 Bear, inside a National Park.
10. We actively and successfully networked for the rescue of a mother fox with pups who chose to den on a pre-primary school field during school closure, near a park in Rome. The fox family, completely wild, was discovered on the school reopening day and was safely captured by LAV and relocated in the park.
11. We petitioned the European Parliament for investigating the disappearance of Djuro the Polish bear while he was under study by the Polish Authorities. He was supposedly strangled by his own collar in which he grew into. We presented the Parliament a study over the application of less invasive and safer standards for the research on wild terrestrial and marine animals, with the request to standardize them over all EU Member States.
12. We attended a stakeholder Meeting over the Kruger National Park policies, opposing the Elephant culling as an option to manage Elephant populations and other wildlife inhumane strategies for wildlife management.
13. We networked for the rescue of the lion cub abandoned and found in a flat in Paris. The cub was afterwards relocated in a Spanish respectable sanctuary.
14. We published a complete guideline to increase public participation for the EU Survey on the Ivory Trade Ban in Europe.
15. We actively networked to spread a guideline to increase public participation for the UK Survey on the Ivory Trade Ban in the United Kingdom.
16. We delivered to DEA, to CITES, to IUCN, to the South African Predator Association (SAPA) and to the Professional Hunter Association South Africa (PHASA) a Petition signed by 110.000 supporters, to ban the Export Quota for Lion bones and body parts and to discourage a quota approval in 2018.
